Cycling Advocacy and Initiatives

A key component of our mission to make northern Michigan an active, bike-friendly community depends on safe and inclusive cycling infrastructure. Our cycling advocacy efforts help put cycling and other forms of active transportation at the heart of future developments in Traverse City, Elk Rapids, and beyond. In close partnership with Traverse Area Recreational Trails, the City of Traverse City, and other cycling advocacy organizations, we’re helping make non-motorized transportation a realistic option for area families and individuals.

Active Transportation Initiatives

Norte’s advocacy efforts focus on areas closely connected to families, education, and accessibility. In addition to hosting walkability audits and Community Slow Rolls, we focus on:

Safe Routes to School – Safe Routes to School has helped dozens of communities foster safer ways to get to school on foot or by bike. Safe Routes to School has offered various grants for over two decades to support non-infrastructure and infrastructure, often in low-income and rural communities.

Planning and Development – Working closely with local cycling advocacy groups, city representatives, and township officials, Norte has supported bike-friendly investments, including new sidewalks, updated cycling signage, and the Three Mile Trail project spearheaded by TART.

Mountain Bike Advocacy

Many of our programs rely on safe, fun mountain bike trails. We work closely with the City of Traverse City, Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association, and other trail advocacy groups to build, maintain, and protect non-motorized trails in northern Michigan.
